@tb@f02@cThe Games which never appeared
@t7@f01@cWritten by: Cybersonik/Anarchy
@t5@f00We all know them, the games which are
announced with big advertising and big
promotions, but that never appeared.
Certain softwarehouses seem to be very
good at this, for example Ocean and
US-Gold. When I consider the crappy
quality of some UsGold games, I wonder
how bad the unreleased titles must
have been. We, as members of the scene
are lucky, because we sometimes get to
see those unfinished versions of
total rubbish games. Anyone out there
who saw the preview of 'Renegade III'
(Amiga conversion), for an example? I
can tell you, it was pure shit.
@^
@t5So where's Dynamic Debugger, the first
game ever to feature full HAM support?
A number of pictures ('live' screen-
shots) where shown in the announcing
poster, but the game never came out of
the development. Perhaps the movement
of the main sprite got a bit too slow
because of the HAM display in the
background???
Or where's Dragon Slayer from Swiss
based Linel software, responsible for
some quite good and some total shitty
games (and remarkably silent these
days???). Dragon Slayer which was
@#@^
@t5released normally on the C64 featured
some very impressive screenshots.
What about some of the classical Ocean
games, the ones which were a big hit
on the C64, but never appeared on
the Amiga? There is quite a list of
them, like Combat School, Gryzor,
Platoon, Renegade, Rastan Saga,
Green Beret.
Fortunately, the games with lower
quality were also not released, like
WEC Le Mans, Slap Fighter, Stealth
(great tune!!), Guerilla Wars. These
games would be quite succesful on the
Amiga, I suppose. Ocean have released
only one classical game, as far as I
know, which is Head over Heels. But
this game was only inserted on a
compilation, as an extra. Shame!!!
@^
@t5Thalamus was one of the leading
softwarehouses on the C64. They pro-
duced a lot of games and everybody
admired Stavros Stavoulas, the great
coder. After the release of Hawkeye
on the Amiga, Thalamus seemed to have
lost their interest in programming
because a number of new games were
announced, but never released. So we
are never going to see the best games
ever, like Delta, Sanxion, Hunter's
Moon, Quedex etc. I think the game
Armalyte was released, but I didn't
see it.
Recently, also Psygnosis shelved a lot
of their ideas. When some Psygnosis'
coders first saw the great demo by
Dionysos (Puggs in Space),they were so
impressed that they were going to make
a game based on the character. The
@#@^
@t5game was going to be entitled 'Puggsy'
but this game will never be published.
Also forget all about Gore (it
featured nice gfx) and Aquaventura.
UsGold, my favourite softwarehouse,
had the intention to release games
based on well-known persons, like
pop-singers and movie-stars. Games
like James Dean, Freddy Krueger, Iron
Maiden, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie
Chaplin and some others were all in
the pipeline, but they will never
appear. Wise decision, UsGold. It
would probably have had something to
do with the fact that it's too hard to
come up with an original plot for this
sort of games. The only famous charac-
ter that UsGold ever transformed into
a game was Michael Jackson, in his
film Moonwalker, and it was TERRIBLE!!
@^
@t5Ocean tried a well-known-persons
conversion on the C64, remember
Frankie Goes to Holywood? Nice game,
really but it had nothing in common
with the popgroup.
Palace promised us games like
Rimrunner, Superthief and many more.
They will never be released.
The last category is the one of games
that made it on PC, but not on the
Amiga (quite a lot of them and I don't
see why only PC..). Spectrum Holobyte
announced Vette a long time ago, and
it has been seen on the PC, but not on
the Amiga. Same counts for Die Hard
by Activision, or Chuck Yeagers
Flightsim.
Because of the death of a software-
@#@^
@t5house some games were never released.
Classical example was Piranha, which
had some very weird conversions ready.
When they died nobody were interested
in publishing them. So forget games
like Trapdoor, X-Men, Dick Special,
Judge Death.
The troubles about Activision resulted
in the loss of some great coin-op con-
versions like Ace Attackers, Drift-
lands and Lock-On. You won't see these
games on the Amiga, so go to the
arcades if you are a fan of these
games.
Well, that was it so far. It's a shame
that all of these games will not be
released, because some of them looked
really promising.
